How to use Chat GPT

For anyone who has ever said, “I’m not a tech person.” From Jen Lew, who gets it.

First, What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is like talking to a super smart assistant who can help you write, research, brainstorm, or just get your thoughts organized. It’s text-based (like email or texting), and it responds to something called a prompt—which is just a fancy word for whatever you type in the box.

You ask. It answers. That’s it.

How to Get Started:

1. Open ChatGPT
Go to chat.openai.com on your computer, or download the free ChatGPT app on your phone (iPhone or Android).

2. Create an Account
Use your email and make a password. If you already have one, just sign in.

3. Type Your Prompt (AKA: Your Request)
In the big box at the bottom of the screen, type what you need. It can be simple like:

“Help me write a birthday message for my niece.”
Or more specific like:
“Give me 3 ideas for a healthy dinner with chicken, rice, and spinach.”

4. Hit Enter and Read the Response
That’s your result. ChatGPT will respond with something based on your request.

What You Can Do Next:

  • Ask follow-up questions (just like a conversation)

  • Click ‘Regenerate’ to get a different version of the answer

  • Copy and paste the response into an email, Word doc, or notes

  • Try a new prompt and ask anything from recipes to resumes

  • Use the voice tool in the mobile app to speak your prompt instead of typing

Helpful Lingo to Know:

  • Prompt = Whatever you type into the chat (question, request, idea).

  • Response = The text ChatGPT gives you back.

  • Regenerate = A button you can click to get a different version of the answer.

  • Tool = ChatGPT itself is a tool. You can also use it like a tool: to write, plan, explain, or brainstorm.

Final Thought

You can’t break it. You don’t need to “sound smart.” And it’s OK if your first prompt is literally, “I don’t know what I’m doing—can you help?”

ChatGPT is a tool. You’re in charge. And it works best when you talk like yourself.
